A candle looked after well will last. Here’s how to get the most from yours.

Burn it.

The first burn sets the tone. Let it run until the whole surface is liquid wax — this prevents tunnelling and means every burn after that will be slower and more even. From then on, 45 minutes minimum, 3 hours maximum.

Trim it.

Keep the wick trimmed to 5mm before each burn. If it mushrooms at the tip, nip it off — this keeps the flame controlled and the scent clean. After snuffing, straighten the wick while the wax is still warm. A wick that drifts toward the vessel wall can blacken it, so it’s worth the 10 seconds.
